Sulphide ore of iron is commonly named as iron pyrites, having chemical formula $ Fe{S_2} $ . Iron present in its ferrous form $ \left( {F{e^{ + 2}}} \right) $ in the iron pyrites.
Chemically iron sulphide is known as iron sulfide.
During the formation of iron pyrite one atom of iron in its $ \left( { + 2} \right) $ state combined with one atom of sulphur.
Iron pyrite is commonly known as fool's gold because it resembles gold when seen by naked eyes. So, anyone becomes easily confused with gold by judging on its appearance.
Iron pyrite is not use as a commercial source of iron extraction because it leads to
formation of excess polluting gas sulphur dioxide.
Iron pyrites have higher content of sulphur. Iron pyrite is a mineral of iron, but it is not used as an ore of it because it requires additional purification methods to remove the impurities due to excessive sulphur dioxide.

Ores of iron element also include haematite $ F{e_2}{O_3} $ , magnetite $ F{e_3}{O_4} $ , siderite $ FeC{O_3} $ and limonite $ F{e_2}{O_3}.2{H_2}O $ .
