He was one of the greatest rulers of the Karnataka region and he was the king who really started to establish the Hoysalas as a separate independent dynasty, freeing them from subordination to the Chalukyas. An army was sent by him to defeat Kolar, Mysore and Talakadu. He built the Keerthi Narayana temple at Talakadu and the Chennakeshwara temple at Belur, in commemoration of this victory, Vishnuvardhana was a Major sponsor of art and architecture.
