Hint: After independence the first elections were held and the first elections were completed in a long period of 5 months. The first elections were a task of huge chaos and resulted in the victory of Indian National Congress.

Complete answer: The Indian general election was started in October 1951 till february 1952 was the first election to the Lok Sabha since India became independent in August 1947. It was conducted under the provisions of the Indian Constitution, which was adopted on 26 November 1949. After the adoption of the constitution on 26 November 1949, the Constituent Assembly continued to act as the interim parliament. The interim cabinet was headed by Jawaharlal Nehru and consisted of 15 members from diverse communities and parties with the support of other members of the INC as well as from other political parties.
1949 candidates competed for 489 seats in the Lok Sabha. More than 173 million out of an overall population of about 360 million were eligible to vote, making it the largest election conducted at the time. This task of election was very difficult as most of indian population was illiterate and was not aware of this voting system. Indian leaders played an important role in creating awareness among the people about the whole election process so that people at a large number can come and participate in this process of electing the first government cabinet in the country.
The Indian National Congress (INC) won at a huge pace with winning 364 of the 489 seats and 45% of the total votes polled. This was over four times as many votes as the second-largest party. Jawaharlal Nehru became the first democratically elected Prime Minister of the country. The INC's important role in India’s independence was the major reason behind its huge victory against all other regional parties. The largest opposition party which emerged was the Communist Party of India.
The elections were conducted by an independent constitutional body, the Election Commission of India and Sukumar Sen was the first election commissioner of India. The role of the election commission is very important as it decides the whole process and also the results of the election.
Let’s examine the option one by one :
A : 1947 was the period when India got independent. India at that time was going through a long and painful process of partition. So at that time the election was not possible because of the huge chaos partition created.
B : 1951 was the period when the first election was held. The major portion of the elections was done in 1951 only and the whole elections were completed till 1952 february. So this option is correct.
C : 1952 was the period when the elections were completed but not started. So this option is wrong.
D : 1957 was the period when the second elections were held in India in this election also INC formed the government and Jawaharlal Nehru became the PM for the second tenure.

So, Option B 1951 is the correct answer .

Note: The 1951 elections were the elections held after independence and the elections of 1946 were the provincial elections before independence of India. So you might tend to get confused with these two elections.
