Hint: Convert the cloth required to stitch a shirt into centimeters. And also convert the length of total cloth to centimeters. When the length of total cloth is divided by the length of cloth required to make a shirt, it leaves a quotient and remainder. Quotient gives the no. of shirts that can be made from the cloth and remainder will be the length of the cloth remaining.

Complete step-by-step answer:
We are given that it requires 2m 15 cm to stitch a shirt. The total length of the cloth is 40m.
Convert the length into centimeters.
1 meter=100 centimeters.
$
  2m15cm = \left( {2 \times 100 + 15} \right)cm \\
  2m15cm = 215cm \\
  40m = \left( {40 \times 100} \right)cm \\
  40m = 4000cm \\
 $
Divide 4000cm by 215cm.
$\dfrac{{4000}}{{215}} = 18\dfrac{{130}}{{215}}$
When we divide 4000 by 215, 18 will be the quotient and 130 will be the remainder, this means
$4000 = \left( {215 \times 18} \right) + 130$
Therefore, out of 40m of cloth 18 shirts with 2m 15cm length can be made and 130 cm of cloth will be left.

Note: Division is distributing a group of things into equal parts. It is one of the four basic operations of arithmetic, which gives a fair result of sharing. The division is the inverse of multiplication. The remainder formula is Dividend= (Divisor× Quotient) + Remainder.
