Hint:
It is greed in the very neat and subtle form, some say it comes with the bride, some say it's a part of custom and traditions, but basically, it is just mere greed of money, power or fame etc and should be and is unethical and illegal.

It is not dependent on gender, as there are some regions and castes where a boy has to give dowry but mostly it's given by the bride side.

Complete answer:
Dowry refers to the gifts-like cash, property, gold, and valuable goods given to a daughter at the time of her marriage. The bride's education, career, etc are not considered as she is not given equal social status to that of a man. The Dowry system has become burdensome for the bride's families in India.

1.the Indian social structure a girl is not given equal opportunities that of a boy.

2.She is not considered as a member of her family but is brought up with a mindset that she belongs to other families(after marriage).

3.It is because of this dowry system, the women suffer a lot of unimaginable tortures and crimes in our society.

4.Seeking dowry has been banned in India since 1961, and an amendment to the law was done in 1986 that any death or violence within the first 7 years of marriage would be tried as related to dowry.

5 Even after the amendment of the law many cases of dowry violence are still taking place.

Note:
The dowry prohibition act 1961 marked the beginning of a new legal framework prohibiting the demanding, giving, and taking of dowry. Nowadays females are provided with equal opportunities in many of the social and economic fields so they are aware of their power.
All these acts and the education they get have made them react with full courage to fight against evil like dowry. The modern age as women are achieving financial independence- to an extent, this helps in closing the gender data gap. Although these changes can only take place slowly, we hope soon dowry will be banned altogether.
