The great Ganga basin has the catchment area between East longitudes 73 ° 30' to 89 ° and North latitudes 22° 30' to 31° 30' which falls in four countries, namely India Nepal Tibet and Bangladesh with major parts in India. The Ganga river originates from gomukh the mouth of the Gangotri glacier. When the ice of this glacier melts ,it forms the waters of a river called Bhagirathi and as Bhagirathi flows down the Himalayas it is joined by Alaknanda river which further forms the Ganga.The basin has nutrient rich sediments and fertile land. This is the reason why many civilizations developed along the Ganga river basin. Today the river flows through well populated regions of India like Uttarakhand, UP ,Madhya Pradesh, Bihar ,West Bengal and into Bangladesh. The river is also used for fishing, irrigation, bathing and it is worshipped by the Hindu religion as mother Ganga.

Note: Ganga basin water resource to India as well as Asia but it also has some negative impacts on the river. Humans and industrial pollutants fill the river making it unsave river even for swimming. A bacteria called Coliform also resides in the river . It comes from the ashes which Hindus submerge in the river as part of their tradition.
