Hint: The Golgi body is a membranous organelle that is made up of a flattened sac-like structure called cisternae that is stacked one over the other. These cisternae have a resemblance with the smooth endoplasmic reticulum. There are about 4-8 cisternae in a stack.

-We all are very well aware that the Golgi body is a cell organelle among many. The Golgi body has got its name from its discoverer scientist known as Camillo Golgi, who in 1898 recognized the apparatus in the nerve cells of a barn owl and a cat by means of the metallic impregnation method.
The structure of a Golgi body is composed of cisternae which appear to have a definite polarity. The two ends or faces are quite different from each other. The sacs on the forming face that is the cis face are associated with the Endoplasmic reticulum and differ from the sacs present on the maturing face that is the trans face in thickness, its contents and the degree of vesicle formation. It appears the material is transported from cis to trans face by vesicles that keep budding off from the cisternal edge to the next sac and so on.

He along with a Spanish scientist called Santiago Raman y Cajal received a Nobel prize for their work on the structure of the nervous system in the year 1906. His work on the nervous system was highly inspired by another pathologist known as Giulio Bizzozero.
