The Stockholm conference on the environment was also called the “Conference on the Human Environment”. The United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution on 15 December in the same year to designate 5 June as World Environment Day. The United Nations also passed another resolution on 15-Decemcer, 1972 to create the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). The first World Environment Day was celebrated in 1974. The slogan for the first World Environment Day was “Only one earth”.
Rapid industrialization and urbanization greatly affect the environment. It became necessary to address various environmental issues such as deforestation, greenhouse effect, global warming, wastage and losses of food, pollution etc. Various campaigns are organised to create awareness towards the protective environmental balance.
