Determinants - Chapter 6, Mathematics (Class 12)

‘Determinants’ is the 6th Chapter of Mathematics in Class 12. Here, students will learn about Determinants which can be defined as follows:

To every square matrix, A = [aij] of the order n, we can associate a number (real or complex) called the determinant of the square matrix A, where aij = (i, j)th element of A. The students need to remember that:

  1. For matrix A, |A| is read as a determinant of A and it is not the ‘modulus’ of A.

  2. Only square matrices have Determinants.

Students can understand that a system of algebraic equations can be expressed in the form of matrices as well, for example, a1 x + b1 y = c1

This Chapter will be helpful for students preparing for engineering entrances like IIT JEE or state-based entrances. Vedantu has all the study materials that can be helpful for the students who can avail themselves of it freely. Students looking for IIT JEE coaching can register themselves online on the Vedantu platforms. This will help them in the timely completion of the syllabus and also help them in the entrance examinations.

FAQs on RD Sharma Class 12 Solutions Chapter 6 - Determinants (Ex 6.2) Exercise 6.2

1. What is the adjoint of the matrix?

The adjoint of a square matrix A = [aij] n × n can be defined as the transpose of the matrix [Aij] n × n, where Aij is the cofactor of the element air. The adjoint of matrix A is denoted by adj A. It is also called the adjugate matrix.

2. Will this Chapter help me in the future?

Students should know that this Chapter will be extremely helpful not just for their board preparations but for all the engineering entrance examinations be it the national ones (IIT JEE) or state ones. In addition, Determinants have a wide range of applications in the field of engineering, science, social science and economics. So students willing to move further in their higher studies can find this Chapter beneficial.

3. What are the topics the Chapter ‘Determinants’ will cover?

In this Chapter, you will learn about Determinants to the order of three with real entries and also learn their properties. In addition, you will learn about minors, cofactors and applications of Determinants in finding the area of a triangle, consistency and inconsistency of the system of linear equations and the solution of linear equations in two or three variables using the invertible matrix.
