Chapter 16 (Circles) of Class 9

Chapter 16 Circles of CBSE Class 9 is a very essential chapter. The chapter deals with various properties of circles. The students need to understand these properties of a circle very well as it will help them understand the advanced concepts that will be taught in higher classes. This chapter is also very beneficial because questions from this section are also asked in competitive exams that the student may appear in the later stage of their life. Following are some properties of circles:

  • A circle refers to a collection of points that are at an equal distance from a fixed point in a plane.

  • A circle divides the plane into 3 parts, that is, an interior part of the circle, an exterior part of the circle, and the circle itself.

  • A chord refers to any line that passes from one point on the circumference to another point of the circumference of a circle.

  • The chord that passes through the centre of the circle is known as a diameter.

  • The circumference of a circle denotes the perimeter of a circle.

  • The chords that have an equal length also subtend equal angles at the centre of the circle. Similarly, the chords that subtend equal angles at the centre of the circle have equal chord length.

  • If any perpendicular is drawn of any chord of a circle from the centre of the circle, then that perpendicular will bisect the chord

  • There will always be only one circle that can pass through 3 non-collinear points.

  • If the two chords of the same circle are of the same length then those two chords will be at an equal distance from the centre of the circle and vice versa.

  • The sum of pairs of angles that are opposite to each other in a cyclic quadrilateral is 180 degrees.

  • The same line segment subtends equal angles.
