• इस कहानी में बादशाह अकबर के प्रमुख मंत्री बीरबल की बुद्धि का वर्णन किया गया है | 

बुद्धिमान बीरबल 

• बादशाह अकबर, बीरबल को बहुत पसंद किया करते थे | बीरबल बहुत बुद्धिमान था। 

• उसकी बुद्धिमानी से कुछ दरबारी बहुत ईर्ष्या करते थे । वे लोग हमेशा बीरबल को नीचा दिखाने के अलग अलग तरीके सोचा करते थे ।

• अकबर के दरबार में एक ख्वाजा सरा नाम का दरबारी रहता था । जो अपनी विद्या और बुद्धि पर बहुत अभिमान करता था | 

• ख्वाजा सरा अपने आगे बीरबल को मूर्ख समझा करता था | 

• एक दिन उसने बीरबल को मूर्ख साबित करने के लिए कुछ मुश्किल प्रश्नों को इकट्ठा कर लिया | 

• उसे लगा  कि बीरबल उन प्रश्नों का उत्तर सही नहीं दे पाएगा । जिससे अकबर की नज़र में उसकी इज्जत बढ़ जाएगी।

• वह अपनी पगड़ी पहनकर दाढ़ी को सहलाते हुए अकबर के पास पहुँचा । 

• अकबर को तीन सवाल देकर उसने कहा कि उनके जवाब बीरबल से पूछे जाए जिससे बुद्धिमता का पता चल सके । 

• अकबर ने उसकी बात मानकर बीरबल को वहां बुलाया और कहा कि ज्ञानी ख्वाजा तुमसे तीन प्रश्न पूछना चाहते हैं | 

• इस पर बीरबल ने अकबर से प्रश्न पूछने को कहा ।

• अकबर ने बीरबल से पहला प्रश्न पूछा - "संसार का केन्द्र कहाँ है ?" 

• बीरबल ने इसके उत्तर मे जमीन पर अपनी छड़ को गाड़कर कहा कि यही वह स्थान है, जो संसार के बीचों-बीच पड़ता है । 

• बीरबल ने आगे कहा कि आप चाहे तो फीते से सारी दुनिया को नापकर देख सकते है ।

• इसके बाद अकबर ने दूसरा प्रश्न पूछा- ." आकाश में कितने तारे हैं ?" 

• बीरबल ने इसके उत्तर मे एक भेड़ मँगाई और  कहा कि इस भेड़ के शरीर में जितने बाल हैं, उतने ही तारे पूरे आकाश में हैं । 

• बीरबल ने आगे कहा कि आप चाहे तो इसके बालों को गिनकर तारों की संख्या जान सकते है।

• अब अकबर ने उससे तीसरा सवाल पूछा- " संसार की आबादी कितनी है ?" 

• बीरबल ने कहा कि इस संसार की आबादी तो हमेशा घटती-बढ़ती रहती है ।

• हर एक पल लोगों का मरना जीना लगा ही रहता है। इसलिए हमे संसार की आबादी का पता लगाने के लिए सभी लोगों को एक जगह इकट्ठा करना होगा तब जाकर उनकी सही संख्या बताई जा सकती है ।

• अकबर  बीरबल के तीनों उत्तरों से सहमत था ।

• ख्वाजा  बीरबल के उत्तरों से सहमत नहीं था । उसने बीरबल को सही जवाब देने को कहा ।

• तब बीरबल ने उससे कहा कि आपने जो प्रश्न पूछे है उनके ऐसे ही जवाब होते हैं। और कहा आप मेरे जवाबों को गलत साबित करके बताए । 

• ख्वाजा इसके जवाब मे कुछ भी नहीं बोल पाया ।
