• The history of AT & T initially starts with the invention of the telephone by the famous Alexander Graham Bell in the year 1876. After Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone, he and his financial supporters, named Gardiner Hubbard and Thomas Sanders established the Bell Telephone Company in the year 1877.

• In the year 1885, AT & T was incorporated as a subsidiary of the Bell Telephone Company that was to establish the long-distance telephone network.

• In the year 1889, AT & T acquired Bell and they became the parent company of Bell.

• In 1927, AT&T launched a long-distance telephone service to London.

• In the year 1956, it launched the submarine cable service which extended its services to the European continent.

• In 1the year 964, it offered the first Transpacific cable service.

• The Kingsbury Commitment which empowered the AT&T Company to act as a monopoly was overturned in the year 1982. This resulted in the breakup of AT&T Company into seven other smaller divisions.

• After this breakup, AT&T Company started their own operations as Southwestern Bell Corporation.

• In 1995, the Southwestern Bell Corp was renamed SBC Communications Inc.

• In the year 2005, SBC Communications Inc. acquired the former parent company, AT&T Corp, and became - AT&T Inc.

Developments of the Company

• Later in the year 2014, AT&T purchased the Mexican cellular carrier Lusacell, after two months, it purchased the Mexican wireless business of the NII holdings. AT&T merged the two companies in order to create AT &T Mexico. 

• In July in the year 2015, AT&T purchased DirecTV for approximately $48.5 billion. AT&T announced plans to converge their existing U-verse home internet and IPTV brands with DirecTV in order to create AT & T entertainment.

• On October 22, of the year 2016, AT&T announced a deal to buy Time Warner for around $108.7 billion in an effort to increase its media holdings. 

• AT&T also owns a roughly 2% stake in the Canadian domiciled entertainment company called Lionsgate. 

• On 13th July, in the year 2017, it was reported that AT&T would introduce a cloud-based DVR streaming service which is a part of the effort and this is to create a unified cloud-based DVR 

• On March 4, of the year 2020, AT&T announced their intent to perform the major cost-cutting moves, which included cuts to the capital investment, and also plans which will promote AT & T

• On April 24, in the year 2020, AT&T announced that on July 1, 2020, company COO John Stankey would take place of Randall L. Stephenson as CEO of AT&T. 

• In January in the year 2021, AT&T announced that due to the global pandemic of Covid-19 around 300 jobs will get affected as the company was planning to cut its workforce in Slovakia. 

• In May in the year 2021, AT&T announced that it will spin off warner Media, which will merge with Discovery, Inc. for $43 billion.
