History of BCCI
The abbreviation of BCCI is the Board of Control for Cricket India. It is the governing body of cricket in India. It is completely responsible for Indian cricket for international and domestic level. It is the richest cricket board in the world and has a great reputation across all cricket boards around the world.
It manages the entire operations of Indian cricket. The board selects players for Indian cricket squads for both Men and Women for their international fixtures. There is an officially elected selection committee for the BCCI, to select squads and coaching staff for all the Indian teams.
BCCI works closely with various cricket boards to organize international fixtures for India for both home and international venues. BCCI also controls the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru, It is a high-performance cricket center for selected players in the Indian team. It is also responsible for acquiring sponsorships and deals to run their finances.
Evolution of BCCI
The history of BCCI is classified into three phases
Early Phase
In 1912, the Indian cricket team sponsored and captained by Maharaja of Patiala visited England for the very first time. In 1926, two representatives from India attended the Imperial Cricket Conference, which is now called the International Cricket Council. The outcome of the meeting leads to the India vs England cricket series in India.
Maharaja of Patiala and others requested for inclusion of ICC. Gilligan gave assurance resulting in a meeting in Delhi on 21 November 1927. The representatives from different parts of India attended the meeting. As a result, the Board for control of cricket in India was created on 10 December 1927. The BCCI was registered under the Tamil Nadu Societies Registration Act in December 1928 and stands out as an independent body. The first president was R E Grant Govan and the first secretary was Anthony de Mello. In 1932, the Indian cricket team toured England for a series.
World Cup 1983 Victory
In 1983, India participated in the Cricket World Cup held in England and successfully won the WorldCup for the First time under the captaincy of Kapil Dev. After this victory, BCCI bid to host the 1987 World Cup and organized it successfully showing that the board has good organizational capabilities.
According to Information Commissioner Sridhar Acharyulu, BCCI's logo 'Star of India' is derived from the British Raj in 1928.
Reforms: 2017 Committee of Administrators
With the development of cricket in India, BCCI was also criticized for its monopolistic practices and suffered from corruption allegations. On 30 January 2017, The Supreme Court nominated a four-member panel Committee of Administrators- Vinod Rai, Ramachandra Guha, Vikaram Limaye, and Diana Edulji to supervise the administration of the BCCI to implement Lodha Committee reforms, which was led by Vinod Rai, former CAG of India. At present, Sourav Ganguly is the president of BCCI.
On 9 August 2019, the BCCI agreed to the anti-doping mechanisms governed by the National Anti-Doping Agency.
Former Indian cricket team spinner Sunil Joshi was named as Chairman of the national selection panel by the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) of BCCI replacing M. S. K. Prasad in that role.
