Role, Features, And Meaning Of CAT

CAT stands for a Common Admission Test which is a graduate management program. The test is designed to enable students to enter into prestigious management institutions across India. There are other management tests like XAT, MAT, XLAT that are similar to CAT. The test is held every year by the IIM’s policy of rotation.

History of CAT

CAT was a paper-based test conducted in a single day until 2009. From 1st May 2009 CAT was changed to a computer-based test and Prometric was entrusted with the tests until 2013. Since 2014, Tata Consultancy services are conducting these tests. The exam now consists of 180-minute tests consisting of 100 questions. 

Eligibility for CAT

  1. The candidates should hold a bachelor's degree with not less than 50% score. The score is, however, lowered to 45% for SC, ST and PWD candidates.

  2. The degree should be from a recognized university from UGC and AICTE.

Exam Pattern for CAT

The exam is held in two sessions on a single day. There are three sections divided into Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension, Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning and Quantitative Ability. The duration is 3 hours and the mode of examination is online. Each paper is of 1 hour and follows the MCQ pattern. There are 100 questions and 1 negative marking for MCQs but no negative marking for Non-MCQ or TITA.
