What is the Crime Investigation Department?

The Crime Investigation Department is an agency that comes under the Government of India. It is considered the most important unit of the police organization. The officers who work in this department are known as CID officers or detectives. 

CID  investigates the cases like murder cases, serious assault cases, robbery, fraud, and sexual crimes, etc. They perform investigating duties like gathering facts and collecting evidence for criminal cases and frauds. Their job as police detectives is to catch criminals, collect evidence and present it in court.

CID Formation

In 1902, the first CID was formed by the British government based on the recommendation of the police commission. At the entrance of the CID office at Gokhale Marg, Lucķnow, there is a portrait of Rai Bahadur Pandit Shambhu Nath and Member of British Empire with a caption " Father of Indian CID". The CID was divided into the special branch, CID, and Crime Branch (CB - CID).

What Does CID Do?

The CID's full name is Criminal Investigation Department and it aims to investigate criminal cases like theft, robbery, murder, etc. It collects facts, and evidence for criminal cases and frauds and catches the criminals, and finally presents the accused with the evidence in court. These investigations can reach different cities and states depending on the level of crime. The CID also takes help from the local police to investigate the case.

CID Functions

Following are the functions performed by Criminal Investigation Department (CID):

• Obtaining and circulating information related to professional cases and classes of crime like bribery, dacoity, robbery at highway and railway, counterfeiting of coins, notes, or stamps, drugging or poisoning by professional poisoners, swindling, economic offense, murders for gain, human trafficking, and so on.

• Controlling, advising, and assisting as per the need of the circumstances in the inquiry or investigation of offenses listed above.

• Establishment of the special squad for investigating the case.

• Making inquiries related to the counterfeiting of railway or telegraphic receipts, frauds relating to the postal department, movement of foreign criminals requires the support of the criminal department.

Crime Branch CID

CB- CID is the special department in CID headed by the Additional Director General of Police and assisted by the Inspector General of Police. The branch is responsible for investigating serious crimes including murder, riots, counterfeiting, and cases entrusted to CB - CID by a state government or high court.

CID Officers Eligibility Criteria

The candidates looking to join CID must be a citizen of India and the minimum qualification required for a candidate to join CID as a sub-inspector or officer is graduation from a recognized university. However, to join CID as constable, the minimum qualification required is a 12th or Higher Secondary Certificate. Additionally, one has to clear the Indian Civil Service Examination which is conducted every year by the UPSC.

Many universities in India offer courses in Criminology at the CID level. These courses may help students to join CID.
