Role of DGP

• He acts as an adviser to the Government where he works in all kinds of matters which are related to the administration of the Police department.

• He is responsible for the internal economy, equipment, training as well as discipline of the police force and also for the efficient organisation as a means of maintaining the law & order, preventing as well as detecting the crimes, etc. In short, he is responsible for the discharging of duties of all the officers of all the ranks under him efficiently.

• It is the duty of DGP to advise in matters of police administration & crime & activities related to law & order. 

• He has also been empowered to make rules as well as orders under the Police Act. Important order that leads to radical changes needs to be taken with the prior approval of the government by the DGP or IGP. 

• He is also considered as the central and main authority to direct operations in case of strikes, riots, political movements, industrial disputes, etc. Under such disturbances, police action is being taken under the DGP. He can also deploy reserve police during serious problems where it is necessary.

• It is the responsibility of the DGP to send his copies of the tour programme in advance to the Chief Minister, Home Minister, Chief Secretary & Home Secretary along with Commissioners of Police, Additional. Directors General of Police, Inspectors General of Police, Dy. Inspectors General of Police, Superintendents of Police as well as other related officers.

Difference Between CP and DGP

• The CP is of different ranks. He could be the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Rank or  Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) Rank or Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) whereas the Director-General of Police is the highest-ranked officer in the States or Union Territories ( UT ). He heads the entire police department in the state or UT. 

• In most of the scenarios, the Commissioner of Police ( CP )  reports to the (DGP) but there are some exceptions as well in the case of Delhi as well as Kolkata Police. On the other hand, the DGP does not report to the CP.
