What is GPS Full Form and Meaning?

GPS is an abbreviation for Global Positioning System (GPS long form). It is a satellite-based navigation system that allows ground users to establish their precise location, velocity, and time 24 hours a day, seven days a week, in any weather conditions, all over the world. It is maintained and developed by the United States Department of Defense and was originally created to aid soldiers and military vehicles, but after a few decades, it became available to anybody with a GPS receiver. It is commonly used by airlines, shipping businesses, courier businesses, truckers, and others to track vehicles and find the best path from one location to another. 

The original GPS was created in the 1960s to help US Navy ships navigate the oceans more precisely. GPS- Fundamentals 

Based on data received from numerous GPS satellites, the GPS receiver determines its own location and time. Each satellite keeps an exact record of its position and time, which it communicates to the receiver.

The satellites are equipped with extremely reliable atomic clocks that are synced with one another and with terrestrial clocks. Any deviation from the time kept on the ground is adjusted regularly.

Similarly, satellite positions are known with remarkable precision. GPS receivers also contain clocks, although they are less reliable and precise. 

Because the speed of radio waves is constant and independent of satellite speed, the time delay between when a signal is transmitted by the satellite and when it is received by the receiver is proportional to the distance between the satellite and the receiver.

A Global Positioning System tracking unit(GPS tracker full form), geotracking unit, or simply tracker is a navigation device that uses the Global Positioning System (GPS) to identify its movement and WGS84 UTM geographic position (geotracking) to establish its location.


GPS Architecture

The architecture of the Global Positioning System (GPS long form) is made up of three segments or units, which are as follows:

  • GPS Space Segment

  • GPS Control Segment

  • GPS Receiver (User) Segment

  1. GPS Space Segment: The Space Unit is made up of 24 operational satellites that are outfitted with massive solar panels and rechargeable batteries that serve as a power source. The satellites' purpose in orbit is to route or navigate radio signals received from the control unit in order to store and re-transmit the message to the appropriate Receiver Unit.

  2. GPS Control Segment: The Control Unit is made up of a number of monitoring and control stations. The GPS satellite signals are monitored by the monitoring stations. These signals are then transmitted to the master control station, where operational parameters are examined and changed before the control signals are transmitted back to the GPS satellites. They are returned by ground antennas.

  3. GPS Receiver (User) Segment: The phrase "User Unit" refers to all GPS receivers, such as mobile phones, laptop computers, and PCs, as well as any other device. The gadget collects GPS satellite signals and calculates the distance between each satellite.
