What is the Meaning of LLB?

LL. B is a degree in law, which is studied by the UG students that is that undergraduate student. The course of LLB originated in England. The course offered a maximum of common law countries like ours as well, India. LLB is the very first professional degree or a primary law degree for the students who are willing to pursue a career in the legal profession of the country.

Legum Baccalaureus or LLB is a three-year degree offered to the aspirants by many renowned private or public colleges in India. However, the candidates can pursue this law course with a graduation degree only. The three-year LLB course which is being offered at all the law colleges of India is being regulated and supervised by BCI, the Bar Council of India.

What to Do After Studying LLB?

After completing the degree called Bachelor of Laws (LLB) a student can choose the following career:

  • He or She can practice as an advocate in the court of law.

  • He or She can work as a legal advisor in corporate firms.

  • He or She can work with Law firms.

  • After LLB one can also work as a solicitor general or can be a public prosecutor or offers services to government agencies, like in Banks and Legal departments.

  • He or She can appear for judicial exams.

  • Can enhance their knowledge in business and commercial law.

  • LLB degree will make a student a law graduate who will be capable to practice law in any law court. After LLB one can also study LLM (Masters in Law).


Test Your Eligibility

Candidates who are willing to pursue the course of LLB are required to fulfill certain requirements in order to be eligible for this course. Mentioned below are the eligibility criteria as mentioned by BCI:

  • The candidates priorly must have a degree of graduation. He must be a graduate in any subject.

  • Apart from the above requirement, some colleges also fix a minimum percentage requirement which the candidates need to attain in order to secure admission in the three-year LLB course which is being offered by them.

  • The (minimum) percentage that is required for the General category candidates is 45% to 55% and that for SC/ST category candidates is between 35% to 45%.

Some colleges offer admission for LLB to the candidates on a merit basis. While Majority of the popular colleges or universities in India offer admission to the law aspirants based on either national-level law entrance exams or on the basis of an entrance exam that is being conducted by them.

1. Is Mathematics Compulsory in the LLB Course?

Ans. According to the eligibility criteria for the LLB course, the candidates who are holding a bachelor’s degree in any subject can pursue the course of LLB. There is no such requirement of Mathematics being the mandatory subject for admission to an LLB course. 

2. Right After Class 12 Can LLB Be Opted for?

Ans. No, after class 12 students who aspire to study LLB should first pursue their under-graduation study in any subject course, like BA LLB, BCOM LLB, BBA LLB, and BSc LLB. After clearing these exams one can study and get admitted to an LLB college.

3. What is Better LLB or BA LLB?

Ans. For the admission to LLB degree, one must hold a bachelors degree, thus LLB and BA LLB are two different courses which are required by the students in different level of study. Thus, there is no comparison between them both. 

BA LLB consists of arts subjects and also law subjects at the preliminary level while LLB is concentrated in law subjects at a much more upgraded level.
