The PVR Group
Ajay Bijli is the founder of PVR Group who started his business journey at the age of 22. He joined his father’s transport business, Amritsar Transport Company in the year 1988. Honestly, Bijli was never so interested in the transport business, and hence after he got married in the year 1990, he spoke to his father about doing something of his own.
Initially, apart from the transport business, Bijli decided to concentrate on Priya Cinemas (which was originally called Priya Love Vikas Cinema). This was acquired by his father in 1978. This property had lost its own reputation and grounded itself to rivalry instead as it was unable to launch good popular movies.
Ajay entered this scenario when he started the cinema’s turnaround by only targeting a niche audience, who played Hollywood movies and he refurbished the interiors. Bijli took good inspiration and ideas from Sterling Cinema Mumbai, after which he renovated Priya by installing a Dolby Sound System, which added life and colour to the grey interiors, also by renovating the toilets and providing a standard uniform to the staff his industry started to beam. Luckily, in those times coinciding with these changes, the Indian government partially liberalized the movie ticket prices as well, this propelled further Priya’s quick ascent.
The first-ever multiplex in India
After Bijli’s father passed away in the year 1992, Ajay juggled between the family’s transport business in the daytime and Priya Cinemas along with his wife’s help at night time. A devastating fire broke at the transport business facility, this incident pushed him to choose between the transport business and cinema business, he picked the latter one. Priya gradually then became a hub where people started to meet in the city (that is in Delhi). With the people meeting there it also successfully attracted many rich income outlets like McDonald’s, Archie’s, and Narula.
