SI Full Form in Police

Let us understand what is SI full form in police? The Sub-inspector abbreviated as S. I. is a very respected and reputable rank. This inspector rank is used extensively in the Southern Asian countries – Bangladeshi Police, Indian Police, Sri Lankan Police, Pakistani Police, and so forth. These policies are formed based on the British model. This rank was formerly used in the British Colonial Police forces and also in many British Police forces as well. This rank is held generally by the police substation or is assisted by an inspector.

SI: Sub Inspector

The abbreviation of SI or SI full name stands for the expanded form Sub Inspector. This rank is very much prevalent in the Police force of India. SI is actually a command of a police station and this rank ranks above the Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) of the police. The rank insignia, which is the distinguished badge for a SI consists of two stars. These two stars are coupled with a red and blue striped ribbon fastened at the outer end of the shoulder straps of the police uniform.

A SI or the sub-inspector is the in-charge of a police station, that is, he or she takes care of that police station in which he or she is assigned or where he or she is posted. A sub-inspector is also responsible for the administration of that police station, administering and maintaining the law and order in his jurisdiction is his fundamental duty as a SI. The duties of a SI are well illustrated in the Indian police acts as well as in the respective state acts. We will discuss the duties of a SI in further sections.

This is a sub-inspector of a lower police rank officer. This officer can file a charge sheet in court and he generally acts as a first investigating officer. SI is assigned with the power to investigate all the cases which come under the jurisdiction of his police station. This is to be noted, he cannot investigate the cases which are assigned to the senior police officers like to the DSP or CID. A SI acts as a bridge between the superior police officers and those who are constabulary ranked below him.


How can one become Sub Inspector of Police?

Anyone aspiring for the post of SI in Police must be a graduate from a recognized university or from any educational board in India. The graduate candidates are then required to appear and then clear the SI examination which is being conducted by the Staff Selection Commission.

Before this, the candidates are required to first clear the Physical Endurance Test after which they become eligible for the written examination. Only after clearing the written exam conducted by the Staff Election Commission, one can appear in the interview and thereby undergo a medical examination.


Powers of the Sub Inspector (S.I) when he or she becomes the Office-in-Charge (O.C)

The powers of a SI as the Office-in-charge are mentioned as follows:

  • He has the power to disperse any unauthorized gathering consisting of five or more persons which might disturb public peace.

  • He can arrest any person under sections 41 and 42 Cr. P.C.

  • The SI can investigate any cognizable offense without any order from the Magistrate and can arrest a person who is involved in such a cognizable crime under Section 154, 156, 41 (1a) Cr. P.C.)

  • He can search any property or house during the investigation which is related to a cognizable crime under section 165 Cr. P.C

  • He has the power to prevent the execution of any cognizable crime and thereby arrest any person who is related to this under Sections 149, 151 Cr. P.C.


Duties of the S.I when posted as the Officer-in-Charge in a Police Station

Mentioned below are the duties of a SI who is being posted as the Officer-in-charge in a Police Station:

  • To ensure that the effective working, as well as management of the staff subordinate to him or her.

  • To maintain the peace and to prevent and detection of the crime happening.

  • To maintain the records and to register that in the police station under his jurisdiction.

  • He is liable to collect and communicate all the inputs on all matters that are related to public welfare.


The Sub-Inspector

A sub-inspector (SI) is generally in command of other police personnel they are with head constables who are equivalent to corporals, who are the commanding police outposts. The sub-inspector is the lowest-ranked officer who under the Indian Police rules and regulations is able to file a charge sheet in the respected court. Generally, a SI is the first investigating officer. The officers who are subordinate to him cannot file the charge sheets, while they only investigate the cases on behalf of the SI. SI can be a station officer in some of the states like Kerala.


Rank of a SI

This is a sub-inspector rank which is above the assistant sub-inspector of police and below is an inspector. Most of the sub-inspectors are directly recruited into the police force and they do have better educational qualifications than all other lower-ranking police officers.

The specialized units like the Central Armed Reserve Police Force, the State Armed Reserve Police, and the Armed Battalions use this same rank, but generally, all these officers do not have the power to investigate. There are specialist non-investigative officers in Indian law enforcement agencies, like the sub-inspector (band) and the sub-inspector (motor transport).

The rank of insignia for the sub-inspector is two (five-point) stars, with a red and blue striped ribbon at the outer end of their shoulder straps. This is alike to the insignia of the subedar in the Indian Army. While the assistant sub-inspector will only have one (five-point) star, and he also has the red and blue striped ribbon at the outer end of their shoulder straps, this rank is similar to the insignia of a naib subedar in the Indian Army. While the rank insignia for the principal sub-inspector and the additional sub-inspector are one and the same.


Eligibility 

To apply for the post of Sub Inspector and the Assistant Sub Inspector, the Staff Selection Commission recruits candidates who appear at the national level in various Central Armed Police Forces like BSF, ITBP, CBI, SSB, CISF, CRPF, and SI.

In the year 2017, the total number of vacancies that were announced by SSC in CPO SI was 2221 in number. Apart from the SSC, all the state government police departments conduct examinations to recruit the position for Sub Inspectors.


SSC CPO (S.I) Exam Eligibility

A candidate should be qualified educationally. S/he should be a graduate in any discipline. S/he must acquire this graduation degree from a recognized university and this should be equivalent. Also, any candidate who has already appeared in the final year of the degree exam and who is waiting for their result is also eligible to appear for this exam. Candidates must take care of the Age Limits, all the aspiring candidates should be within the age limit of 20 years to 25 years of age.

  • General – Height – 170 cm. Chest Normal – 80 cm and Expended – 85 cm

  • For candidates who are from the Hilly areas of Garhwal, Kumaon, Himachal Pradesh, Gorkhas, Dogras, Marathas, Kashmir Valley, Leh & Ladakh regions of J&K, North-Eastern States, and Sikkim – Height – 165 cm. Chest Normal 80 cm and Expended – 85cm.

  • Candidates belonging to Scheduled Tribes – Height -162.5 cm. Chest Normal – 77cm and Expended – 82 cm.  


Physical Standards for Female Candidates:

  • General – Height – 157 cm.

  • Candidates belonging to Hill areas of Garhwal, Kumaon, Himachal Pradesh, Gorkhas, Dogras, Marathas, Kashmir Valley, Leh & Ladakh regions of J&K,
    The North-Eastern States and Sikkim – 155 cm.

  • Candidates belonging to ST – 154 cm.
