Gender equality and sex ratio have always been a hot topic of discussion. Reproduction is the method of survival of all organisms. The sexually reproducing organisms have an almost 1:1 sex ratio. However, it may vary. In the case of humans, the men-to-women natural ratio stands at 105:100. This means that for 100 females in the world, there are almost 105 men. This tends to be the natural sex ratio. However, this ratio is severely affected by various human activities. 

The examples may include China and India with lower females per male. In China, around 107 males per 100 females are present. In India, 108 males per 100 females are present. Be it the lowest sex ratio country or the highest sex ratio country; there is always an imbalance between both genders. Either the male population is too high as in the highest sex ratio country, or the female population is too high as in the case of the lowest sex ratio country. 

There are several reasons for imbalance. It may be natural or human-made. The primary reason for the lower female ratio in many countries is female infanticide and female foeticide. This not only causes immediate disruption in the population cycle but also disrupts the future balance. There is also a lower male population present in the country with the highest female population, Nepal. There is no significant reason for this. However, some researchers say that it is due to the higher mortality rate of the males in each age group which leads to an increase in the number of females in each age group. The primary reason for this imbalance is argued as natural reasons rather than man-made reasons.

Reasons of Abnormalities 

There are several reasons for abnormality in the sex ratio. However, the number of male infants is slightly more than that of female infants because it is nature’s rule to create more male offspring due to their higher mortality rate. However, this condition doesn’t hold an account in today’s world of advanced technology. 

The following are some of the researched reasons for the gender ratio abnormalities: -

1. Reasons for higher sex ratio (more males than females) 

There are several reasons for the higher sex ratio or more males in some countries. It may include both natural and artificial reasons. 

• In countries like India, male offspring are preferred over female offspring due to many reasons such as dowry, social prestige, and many more. As a result, in many states, females are killed inside the womb or just after birth. Female foeticide and infanticide have created a significant imbalance in the country. In countries where domestic violence is still persistent, the females often commit suicide or are killed. This ultimately affects the overall sex ratio.

2. Reasons for lower sex ratio (more females than males) 

A lower sex ratio can cause as much imbalance as the higher sex ratio. The country with the highest female population, such as Nepal, is very susceptible to gender imbalance. Following are some of the reasons for the more elevated female population.

• As per the law of selection, females have a lower mortality rate than men. Therefore, there is a higher chance for a female to survive up to ancient age. However, males have slightly higher mortality rates. Therefore, there is a higher number of females than males in several places where there is no external manipulation (foeticide or infanticide)

• The top 10 countries with the highest female population are war-based areas, or previously they used to be war-based areas. As a result, most of the men used to join the army. Many of them get killed in the wars too. Therefore, the number of females outnumbered the males in such countries. This trend started around the end of world war.

Top 10 countries with the Highest Female Population 

As mentioned above, the country with the most female population is - Nepal. It is also sometimes known as the only female country. However, these ratios may vary from time to time. Therefore, we have presented a list of the top 10 countries with the highest female population so that you can get an idea about which country has more females than males.

1. Nepal 

It is the country with the highest female population at present. Out of 29,137,000 people 15,788,000 are females. It accounts for about 54.19% of the total population. It is the lowest sex ratio country as the number of males is lesser than the females.

2. Hong Kong SAR 

Second, the Hong Kong SAR in China comes on the list, with almost 54.12% female population. The total population is around 7,500,000. Out of the total population, approximately 4,057,000 females are present in the country.

3. Curacao 

It is an island which is located near the Arabian Sea. It is often counted as the country under the Kingdom of Netherlands. Here, the female population is around 54.6 %. The number of women in this country is about 89,000 out of the 164,000 total population.

4. Martinique 

The female population is 54%, with a total population of 375,000, out of which 203,000 are present. It is another island country on the list. It comes under the territorial collectivity of France.

5. Latvia 

The female population stands at 53.91% of the total population. Latvia is situated in the north-eastern part of Europe. The women per men ratio are around 118.52. 6. Guadeloupe 

The female population is around 216,000 among the total population of 400,000. Therefore, the percentage of women is around 53.88%. This is the part of the lesser Antilles in the Caribbean.

7. Lithuania 

The country has a female percentage of 53.72%, with a total population of 2,722,000. Out of this, the number of females is 1,462,000. 

8. Ukraine 

Ukraine has a total population of 43,734,000. Out of this, the number of females is around 23,471,000. The percent of females is around 53.67 %.

9. Russia 

You must be astonished to know that the most prominent country that is Russia is also one of the countries with the highest female population. It has about 53.65% of females in the country.

10. Belarus 

The women per men ratio in Belarus is about 115.69. The percentage of females is about 53.5% in this country. It is present in the Eastern Europe region. It has Russia, Ukraine, Poland as the neighbouring countries.

Consequences of Imbalanced Sex Ratio 

• The most drastic impact of an imbalance in gender ratio is the reduction in the birth rate. 

• The social status of the weaker section may increase or decrease depending upon the conditions of the region or the country. 

• There will be a shortage of men or women in the future due to the gender imbalance, which may ultimately cause domestic violence at home. Also, it will increase competition among the genders due to the shortage of the other gender. 

• In many cases, it is seen that the lower or higher sex ratio often leads to malpractices such as human trafficking. Therefore, it becomes a severe issue for the country.

 A balanced gender ratio is significant for the development of the country. An imbalance or shortage of any gender will have drastic effects on the balance of a nation. Therefore, it is crucial to maintain the natural sex ratio with limited interference and manipulation by humans.
