2. What are the properties of the Matrix multiplication as discussed in Class 10 Maths for Chapter 9?

The properties of the Matrix multiplication are listed below:

  • The matrix multiplication is only possible if the number of columns of the first matrix is equal to the number of rows of the second matrix.

  • The resultant matrix will then have the number of rows the same as the first matrix and the number of columns the same as the second matrix.

  • The matrix multiplication does not follow the commutative law.

  • The associative law is followed by matrix multiplication.

  • With respect to matrix addition, matrix multiplication follows the distributive law.

3. According to ICSE Class 10 Maths Chapter 9, what are the conditions of doing the addition, subtraction and multiplication of two matrices?

The following points must be kept in mind while doing the addiction, subtraction and multiplication of two matrices:

  • The order of the two matrices must be equal, that is, the number of rows and columns of the first matrix must be equal to the number of rows and columns of the second matrix in case of addition and subtraction.

  • In the case of multiplication, the number of columns of the first matrix should be equal to the number of rows of the second matrix.

  • While doing addition or subtraction, the adjacent elements are added or subtracted whereas, in the multiplication of two matrices, the elements of the row of the first matrix are multiplied by the elements of the column of the second matrix.

4. Define the following terms in accordance with Chapter 9 of Class 10 ICSE Maths:

  1. Row matrix

  2. Column matrix

  3. Elements of a matrix

  4. Square matrix

  5. Identity matrix

  1. Row matrix – A matrix having only one row is known as a row matrix.

  2. Column matrix – A matrix having only one column is known as a column matrix.

  3. Elements of a matrix – A matrix contains some numbers or alphabets. These numbers or alphabets are known as elements of a matrix.

  4. Square matrix – A matrix in which the number of rows is equal to the number of columns is called the square matrix.

  5. Identity matrix – A matrix having the diagonal elements as unity and other elements as zero is known as an identity matrix. It is a type of square matrix.

5. Following the concepts of Chapter 9 ICSE Class 10 Maths, what are the significant properties of the addition of matrices?

Beneath is the important properties of the addition of matrices:

  • A + B = B + A is only possible if A and B are matrices of the same order.

  • Let A, B and C be three matrices of the same order then the relation (A + B) + C = A + (B + C) is possible.

  • The condition A + O = O + A = A is only true when the order of A and O are the same and O is the null or zero matrices.

  • If -A is the additive inverse of matrix A then the property obtained will be (-A) + A = O or A + (-A) = O.
