ICSE Class 10 German Syllabus for Semester (1 & 2) 2024-25

German is an inflected language, with four cases: nominative, accusative, genitive and dative. It has weak and strong verbs. Students should practice authoritative texts using audio texts from all German-speaking countries with proper exercises. The German syllabus for Class 10 will consist of tests in vocabulary, syntax and idiom, and formation of sentences in German representing the given words or information. Students will also learn to formulate short German compositions, including brief explanations, descriptions, or narratives.

ICSE Class 10 Exam Pattern:

The ICSE provides its students with the exam pattern that is developed to help the students in understanding the German language in-depth. The syllabus for the German language is created such that the students gain learning exposure in terms of grammar to improve their basic knowledge of the language and increase error-free reading and writing skills. The syllabus also assists the students in writing complex sentences with ease, efficiently understanding tenses, and simultaneously learning the concepts of the German language which will be useful for future use especially by the student who wishes to move abroad. The German language will instill confidence in the students to easily communicate with others and comprehend what others are saying.

Assessment  Pattern of ICSE for German:

The ICSE follows the assessment pattern that has been described as follows, it will help the student in acknowledging the different aspects of the evaluation of a student and how the students can prepare themselves for the exams conducted for testing the three language skills.

a) Listening Skills:

To test the listening skills of the students the examiner will read aloud a passage of about 300 words twice at a normal reading speed of about 110 words a minute. Candidates can make brief notes during the readings. Next, the students are required to answer an objective type test based on the passage, on the paper provided for the same. 

b) Speaking Skills:

To test the speaking skills the candidate makes an oral presentation of about two minutes, which is followed by a discussion on the subject with the examiners, for three minutes. The Subjects for the presentation can include narrating an experience, giving directions, providing a description, expressing an opinion, giving a report, and more. The candidates must be given an hour for the preparation of their subject for presentation and be given a choice of subject. 

c) Creative Writing Skills:

To test the creative writing skills every candidate is required to write short compositions in German.

The assessment is conducted jointly by the German subject teacher and the external examiner who will each assess the candidate based on the student’s performance. The External Examiner can be nominated preferably, by the Head of the School who could be from the faculty but not teaching the German language in the class.

Marks Distribution:

The Subject Teacher or the internal Examiner is allotted 10 marks and the external examiner will offer out of 10 marks. The total marks can be obtained out of 20 in which listening skills have 5 marks, speaking skills have 5 marks, and creative writing skills have 10 marks, which are sent to the Council by the Head of the School or the Principal. The Head of the School enters the marks, on the mark sheets provided by the Council. Schools need to maintain a record of all assessments conducted in listening, speaking, and creative writing skills for the candidates of Classes IX and X. The copies include the assessments tests, topics for presentation, and marks awarded.
