About the Chapter

The first chapter of this book is dedicated to Measurements and Experiments. The world is wonderfully diverse in its multitude of variables that govern all aspects of life. What is the measure of distance? And time? How do we use these measurements in our lives? Measuring an object in terms of length or height may be difficult to comprehend when the particular object has no frame of reference with which to compare it. A ruler can be used only if there is something with which to compare it. And a meter stick can be used if there is something with which to measure it. In the same way, calculations of distance, time, and mass would become much easier if we had a reference object with which to compare them.

Types of Measurements

In the first chapter of the book, "Measurements and Experiments", we learn about two types of measurement- The relative and the absolute. Relative measurements consider a difference between two quantities instead of a direct comparison. How much taller is an adult over a child? And how much heavier or lighter is an animal than another? Absolute measurements simply compare two objects to each other without any consideration about their relation. How much is the length and the height of a table? The distance between two points can be measured in terms of their length and their area.

Types of Experiments

However, to measure them we need a unit of measurement that we call, "Distance". How much is the distance between London and New York? In this chapter also, there are two types of experiments- Inertial Experiment and Non-Inertial Experiment. Inertial Experiment uses objects that have weight or mass. The non-Inertial experiment uses objects that move without any weight or mass. So, both the experiments are the same. But the only difference between both is that the Non-Inertial Experiment is applied to the 'Free' system and the Inertial Experiment is applied to the 'Bound' system.

You can find the whole solution for this chapter.

Chapter Coverage

This chapter then goes into actual measurements and experimentation teaching you how to measure distance by using a ruler and drawing an invisible line. This chapter also teaches you how to calculate volume based on the length of pipe and Diameter. The last section in this chapter is about the power of electricity; it teaches you about amperage (amps) such as what they mean, why they are important, types of circuits/electrical systems like AC & DC circuits, etc.

Just study thoroughly and you will easily ace your exams!

FAQs on Selina Concise Physics Class 9 ICSE Solutions for Chapter 1 - Measurements and Experimentation

1. How is practical work in this chapter?

The interesting thing about the experiment conducted in class is that it led to a surprising result. The student who was supposed to get three gross errors instead ended up with zero. It was as if the student had used his time wisely and not wasted seconds on completing sloppy calculations. That's more than likely because of his way of thought and planning, which we'll learn more about over the next few chapters! This experiment and future experiments will provide us with useful data that we’ll use to introduce friction resistance forces later on in the chapter since those are an important part of motion problems.

2. How is Selina Concise Physics Class 9 ICSE Solutions for Chapter 1 - Measurements and Experimentation?

The book is about Physics concepts that are taught in class.  It has information about how to measure distance, mass, volume, time etc., as well as instructions on how to set up an experiment. Selina wished the book had examples of experiments she could do at home, but there weren't any. The site also has some full contact lectures available for free download, which goes into more detail with each concept introduced in the textbook section of the site.

3. How is Vedantu helpful with Physics solutions?

Vedantu is an education company that helps students learn about various subjects. Vedanta education company has a wide range of subjects that includes math, science, English, Sanskrit, History and more. The courses are interactive content which involves solving problems. The courses are self-paced so students can go through at their own pace without any pressure. They have rich text explanations which give them visuals for understanding difficult concepts.
