FAQs on International Mathematics Olympiad (IMO) Syllabus for Class 1 to 12

1.  Is the Syllabus of IMO Necessary?

Ans: The International Mathematics Olympiad syllabus is one of the primary requisites for students wishing to attempt the exam. The IMO syllabus helps the student familiarise themselves with the various topics from which questions are asked in the exam. By referring to the syllabus of the International Maths Olympiad, a student can get a headstart on his/her preparation. Since the syllabus of the IMO is vast and encompasses different curricula followed by the ICSE/ISC, CBSE, and State Boards, knowing the contents of the syllabus can be of great aid to the students as they will know how to approach the subject matter and develop their preparation strategy accordingly.

2. Is the Weightage of the Different Sections Mentioned in the Syllabus of IMO?

Ans: The IMO syllabus for a particular Class does not prescribe the weightage of the different topics as such. The different topics included in the syllabus of Maths Olympiad can be included under the different sections of the question paper and as such students need to give equal importance to each topic as they are required to be thorough with all of them. However, students can take note of the following points with regards to the IMO syllabus

In the Level 1 IMO, questions will be 60% from the current class syllabus and 40% from the previous class syllabus, i.e., the Class 8 IMO exam will have 60% questions from the Class 8 syllabus and 40% questions from the Class 7 syllabus. In the Level 2 IMO exam, questions will be as per the current class syllabus only. Also, questions of the Achievers Sections will be as per the current class syllabus only.

3. Where Can I Download the Syllabus for IMO Exams?

Ans: You can download the complete syllabus for the IMO exams from Vedantu. The International Mathematics Olympiad Syllabus has been made available class-wise and you can access the syllabus as per your requirement. Moreover, the class-wise IMO syllabus has been made available on Vedantu in a downloadable PDF format. You can access the PDF free of cost and keep your syllabus handy for future reference.

4. How does a student benefit by taking the olympiad exam?

Ans: The students are marked based on the scores they get. After the first test, they can judge themselves academically at the three levels mentioned before. At the end of the exam, the students receive a student performance report which gives a detailed performance review comparison of the other students in their school. This helps them understand their position with regards to the other students. Students who top, get cash awards as well as recognition from scholars.

5. Can I take part in more than one olympiad examination?

Ans: Yes, you can participate in more than one olympiad examination. The Olympiads that are conducted are different from each other. Most of the Olympiads are conducted during different times of the year. Hence, students can appear for all the Olympiads in the year, depending on their eligibility, which is then divided based on their class. Despite being conducted by different organisations, they could sit for more than one examination.

6. What is the criteria for the ranking?

Ans: The students who are attempting to write the IMO exam will normally be worried about their ranking. Generally, a student scoring higher total marks will be accorded a higher rank. However, in case two or more students score the same total marks, a higher rank will be awarded to the student scoring higher marks in sections accorded higher priority.
