Detailed Monthly Salary of State MLA With Allowances

The average monthly salary of an MLA includes various allowances which are provided as per the rules of the State Legislatures. These allowances include house rent allowances, travel allowances, constituency allowances, secretarial allowances and some other compensatory allowances. The average monthly salary of MLAs in India is above 1 lakh as per the records of the year 2020.

Salary of  MLAs in India - other Benefits and Allowances

Given below are the few allowances and other benefits that are provided to the Legislative Members along with their monthly salary:

  1. Sitting Allowances/ Daily Allowances:

Besides the basic monthly salary, the state MLAs also get Rs.2000/- per day as their sitting allowances during the period of Assembly Session and Committee Meetings.

  1. Medical Facilities:

Each MLA and their family members will also be provided with Medical Attendance and treatment in all Government hospitals, Dispensaries and other Recognized Hospitals.

  1. Travelling Allowance (TA) and Facilities:

In case any state MLA participates in Parliament Session or meeting of a Parliamentary Committee with the official vehicle, they are provided with the following travel allowances and facilities

  • By Rail: One free non-transferable First class AC or Executive class of any train pass and one First class and one Second class fare.

  • By Air: One and one-fourth airfare of the airlines in which the member travels.

  • By Road: Rs. 16/- per km.

  1. Mileage Allowance:

A Mileage Allowance for the purpose of travelling on official duty by his/her own car or by private vehicle Rs. 16/- per km.

  1. Family Pension:

Family pension to the widow/widower of the Member shall be fixed at 50% of the amount of pension that the Ex-Member is allowed to withdraw at the time of his/her death subject to a minimum of Rs. 3000/- per month.

1. What are the after retirement benefits provided to the state  MLAs?

As an after retirement benefit, the state MLAs are provided Rs. 5000 per month in the form of pension, along with Rs. 8000 as diesel expenditure. Along with these, they are also provided with the advantage of free railway pass and medical facility lifelong.


Over the past 7 years, the average salary of the MLAs has been raised by approximately 125% but this hike varies according to the states. For example, the Delhi state assembly had increased the MLA salary by 450% while it was only raised to 170% in Telangana state.

2. How much Pension amount is Given to the MLAs after Retirement

Any state MLA who has served the legislature for a minimum period of 5 years is provided with a pension amount of Rs.5000 per month. Along with it, they are also provided with an additional pension of Rs. 1000/- for every year.
