FAQs on ICSE Class 10 Mathematics Revision Notes Chapter 24 - Measures of Central Tendency

1. Following the concepts in ICSE Class 10 Maths Chapter 24, solve:

Assume that the mean of 6, 4, 7, 'a' and 10 is 8. Find the value of 'a'

In the following answer, you have been provided with the mean of all the numbers and particularly have to find out the value of a

No. of terms = 5

Mean = 8

Sum of numbers = 8 x 5 = 40 .(i)

But, sum of numbers = 6+4+7+a+10 = 27+a ..(ii)

From (i) and (ii)

27+a = 40

a = 13

2. Following the concepts in ICSE Class 10 Maths Chapter 24, solve:

Twenty students in a test received the following marks:

These are numbers 2, 6, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 15, 16, 16, 18, 19 and 20.

Calculate:

The mean, the median, and the mode are (i) the mean; (ii) the median; and (iii) the mode

Arrange the terms in ascending order:

2, 6, 8, 9, 10, 11, 11, 12, 13, 13, 14, 14, 15, 15, 15, 16, 16, 18, 19, 20

Number of terms = 20

Σx=2+6+8+9+10+11+12+13+14+15+15+15+16+16+18+19+20=257

(i) \[Mean=\frac{\sum x}{\sum n}=\frac{257}{20}=12.85\]

(ii) \[Median=\frac{10^{th}term+11^{th}term}{2}=\frac{13+14}{2}=\frac{27}{2}=13.5\]

(iii) Mode = 15 as it has maximum frequencies i.e. 3
